1
Investigate the opportunities. Familiarize yourself with the varied options available in the education setting. Check out possible career openings at colleges and universities. Go to the websites of local school districts and higher education facilities and look at their job postings.
-
2
Match your skills with the job requirements. The skills required for jobs outside the field of education may match the requirements for similar careers inside the field of education. The setting may change but requirements and job descriptions usually stay the same.

3
Attain any needed certifications. Even though skill sets may transfer into the field of education, school systems often require its employees to have specific certifications. This often applies to paraprofessionals and teaching assistants.
-
4
Learn the differences between jobs inside education and outside education. The field of education is generally more conservative in its views. Dress codes and on-site behavior are usually stricter than in other careers. If you come from a job where jeans and hourly smoke breaks are the norm, you may be shocked to find the school doesn't allow either of these things.
-
5
Ask questions. Call or email people currently in the job position you want to learn more about. Most people in education are open to sharing their insight with someone wanting to join them in the field.
-
6
Have a positive attitude. Having a career in education, regardless of your position, is often stressful. Maintaining a positive attitude is key to your success.
