How to Sterilize a Sponge

Sponges can pick up bacteria and viruses if they’re used a long time without cleaning. Putting them through the dishwasher or washing them in the sink isn’t enough. Follow these steps to sterilize your sponges.

  • Bleach

    Sterilize a Sponge with a Microwave

  1. Step 1

    Rinse the sponge with clean water. Make sure the sponge is wet.

  2. Step 2

    Put the sponge in the microwave.

  3. Step 3

    Microwave the sponge on the microwave's highest power setting. An ordinary kitchen sponge should take about 2 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the sponge from the microwave carefully. It will be hot.

  5. Step 5

    Let it cool and your clean sponge is ready to be used.

  6. Sterilize a Sponge with Bleach

  7. Step 1

    Add 1 tsp. of bleach to 1 cup of water.

  8. Step 2

    Soak the sponge in the bleach solution for at least 5 minutes.

  9. Step 3

    Wring out the bleach solution and your clean sponge can be used.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the sponge is wet before you place it in the microwave. A dry sponge could catch on fire. Don't leave your microwave unattended while doing this.
