Things You'll Need:
- White Vinegar
- Heavy Duty Laundry Detergent
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Baking Soda
- 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution
- Brush
- Vacuum Cleaner
- Old rags or cloths
-
Step 1
Reach for the vinegar. Unfortunately, the most common source of cat odor is from cat urine which can settle into hardwood flooring. One of the most tried and true solutions is a 3:1 mixture of warm water and white vinegar.
-
Step 2
Saturate the spot thoroughly using an old rag or cloth with the white vinegar and water solution. Dry the area completely and repeat the process. This will save your hardwood and linoleum floors and remove that foul stench that Tabby left behind.
-
Step 3
Save your carpet too! You can use a similar method to rid your carpet of cat odors but it will take a little extra effort. Apply the white vinegar/water mixture as previously described.
-
Step 4
After drying the area, sprinkle some baking soda over it and mix in 3/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution along with one teaspoon of a quality dish detergent. Apply this over the baking soda. Use a brush (that you will discard) to work it all into the carpet. Then vacuum it up when done.
-
Step 5
Ugh! Get that smell out of clothing! If heavy duty laundry detergents fail to eliminate the odors from your clothes, try applying a small amount of apple cider vinegar (1/4 cup or less) along with your laundry detergent. Your clothes will smell apple fresh and that nasty odor will be gone for good!

on 4/6/2009 awesome tips - gotta try the vinegar! i find also that sometimes its not only the urine smell that gets me, its also the inherent smelly smell of an indoor cat. words cannot describe it. in any case, i use something called FRESCOPET. its a fragrant collar thingy i put on my cat's collar and it time releases a subtle fragrance. its just enough to freshen up the cat smell. i change it every week. my favorite one is jasmine..check them out online frescopet.com

on 7/23/2008 Interesting tips! I have a very sensitive nose for odors and nothing I’ve used has worked better than the RGF Guardian Air Plug in Plus. I have one in my basement, bedroom, and next to the cat litter box! It eliminates those funky smells and makes me feel good about my house. I’d recommend it to everyone!
