Just the right placement of a wall mirror can help open up a room by giving it a larger appearance. With a few simple steps, you can hang a mirror correctly wherever you want it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mirror
  • Large Piece of Paper
  • Low Tack Tape
  • Hardware (nails, screws, anchors)
  • Hammer or screwdriver
  • Bubble Level
  1. Step 1

Trace the mirror you will be hanging onto a piece of large butcher paper, piece of wrapping paper or old newspaper. Make sure to mark where the mirror’s hangers are located on the paper. Cut out the tracing, allowing you to place the paper guide in a variety of locations to determine the best placement of the mirror.

  2. Step 2

Experiment with the location of the mirror by moving the paper guide to different locations so you can see how it looks. Using low tack tape, adhere the paper guide to the wall and step away to see the effect.

  3. Step 3

Adjust the height of the paper so the middle of the mirror will be at eye level. A person standing a few feet away should be able to see their shoulders and face in the mirror.

  4. Step 4

Choose the method you will be using to hang the mirror. If you are hanging the mirror directly on a stud, a nail will suffice. You might also use a threaded screw as well as a screw anchor, if you are hanging on drywall.

  5. Step 5

Hammer or screw in the hardware you have chosen, using the paper markings as a guide. Screw or nail directly through the paper which can be ripped away once the hardware is in the wall.

  6. Step 6

    Remove the paper guide.

  7. Step 7

Hang the mirror on the newly attached hardware.

  8. Step 8

Level the mirror using a bubble level or by eye-balling from across the room.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the mirror is hung on a wire in the back, use a metal coat hanger from above to hold the mirror against the wall. Once the wire has caught the hardware and is secure, you can remove the coat hanger.
  • Check to make sure the hardware is securely attached to the wall before hanging the mirror. Use wall anchors if the mirror is heavy.
