Cat urine can stain and leave a strong odor that no one wants to be around. By following these steps, you can clean stains and remove odors caused by cat urine.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean towel or absorbent paper towels
  • Club soda or water
  • White vinegar
  • Hairdryer or wet/dry vacuum
  • Pet odor neutralizer
  1. Step 1

Blot as much of the urine as possible with a clean towel or absorbent paper towels. Press down firmly (do not rub) until the wetness is removed.

  2. Step 2

Rinse the affected area thoroughly with a full glass of water or club soda.

  3. Step 3

Remove as much of the rinsing liquid as possible by blotting from the outside in so you do not spread the scent or stain.

  4. Step 4

Mix together 1 qt. of warm water with ½-cup white vinegar and pour it onto the area with cat urine.

  5. Step 5

Press a clean towel or paper towels onto the area and remove all liquid. Use a wet/dry vacuum or with a hairdryer on cool setting if necessary.

  6. Step 6

Spray a pet odor neutralizer onto the area to prevent the odor from resurfacing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean the cat urine as quickly as possible to help prevent the stain from setting. This is especially important as the odor and stains are extremely strong.
  • Look at product labels and choose those that are nontoxic so that your family and pets can safely sit on the affected area.
  • Liquid seeps downward and outward so be sure to clean the surrounding area in addition to the visible stain.
  • You need to clean as well as deodorize to remove the odor and help eliminate the smell that is not obvious to humans but can be detected by animals.
  • Do not use products containing ammonia to clean cat urine, since this smells somewhat like urine to animals and will cause them to continue to urinate on that area.
  • Treat stains properly to avoid permanent damage to carpets and upholstery.
