Select Food for a Block Party

  1. Step 1

Visit your grocery store or local market. You can call ahead to order what you need for the party or pick a variety of foods like chips and dip, cheese and vegetable plates.

  2. Step 2

Order groceries online. Most large grocery stores will deliver your food for a minimal fee. This helps to ensure that food is fresh.

  3. Step 3

Select foods that are easy to cook. During the summertime, go with grill favorites like pineapple and meats such as hamburgers, ribs and hot dogs.

  4. Step 4

Buy plenty of beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Try iced tea and lemonade for the kids, and beer or wine coolers for the adults.

  5. Step 5

Remember that your neighbors may have different dietary needs. Keep different types of food on hand such as vegetarian, vegan or kosher so that all guests feel included.

  6. Step 6

Go with party favorites. Buffalo wings, pizza, coleslaw and corn on the cob are longstanding party staples.

  7. Step 7

Remember dessert. Pies, cakes and caramel popcorn are all easily made or bought and each serves as a crowd pleaser.

  8. Arrange Food for a Block Party

  9. Step 1

Contact local restaurants. Place a large enough order to feed the crowd and make sure they have the food ready about 2 hours prior to the start of the party.

  10. Step 2

Hire caterers. Catering companies can provide dishware, tables and chairs for your guests. Some catering companies simply provide the food and supplies, while others will also provide a service staff during the party.

  11. Step 3

Host a potluck block party. Each neighbor can either cook or buy pre-made food and you can even start a sign-up sheet to prevent doubling up on the same foods.

  12. Step 4

Keep several coolers handy. If it's a warm day, use plenty of ice, or consider pooling your resources with other neighbors to access numerous refrigerators and freezers.

  13. Step 5

Make sure that you have covers for the dishes. To prevent flies and other bugs from touching the food, use screens, napkins or plastic covers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch out for food fights. Kids can become overly excited at block parties, so keep an eye on them to ensure that they are behaving.
