Things You'll Need:

    Arrange Block Party Music

  1. Step 1

Have neighbors bring their music equipment. Microphones, karaoke machines and instruments can be very entertaining while neighbors enjoy the block party.

  2. Step 2

Bring in local talent. Singers, bands and other musicians can be hired to provide music. You and your neighbors can pool funds to hire entertainment.

  3. Step 3

Set up a sound system. Attach speakers to trees or opt for freestanding sound systems that can resonate well within a large area.

  4. Step 4

Notify the neighborhood. The noise could be obnoxious to some neighbors, especially those on non-participating streets. Enforce an official start and end time for music to make it easier for your neighbors.

  5. Step 5

Let the kids take a turn. Parents and kids often have very different tastes in music. To keep the teenagers happy, let them select their own music for the block party.

  6. Step 6

Encourage neighbors to bring an iPod or MP3 player if they own one. These devices are capable of storing a wide variety of music and you can even customize a music playlist specifically for the block party.

  7. Select Block Party Music

  8. Step 1

Choose music that is festive and upbeat. Pick high-energy music and your guests will have more energy for dancing and entertaining.

  9. Step 2

Opt for music that has minimal bass. Loud bass can be disruptive and is often easy to hear, even several blocks away.

  10. Step 3

Be sure to include holiday-specific music if the block party falls on or near a major holiday. For the fourth of July, play patriotic songs. For a summer kickoff party, include summer-themed songs like "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams.

  11. Step 4

Alternate genres of music. Since many guests will be in attendance, it's unlikely that everyone will have the same tastes in music. Play a mix of country, rock, Latin and electronic to suit all styles of music.

  12. Step 5

Play local favorites. If your town has a great local band or famous rock star that hails from your city, be sure to include their music on the play list.

Tips & Warnings
  • Select good speakers for the music. There's nothing worse than poor sound ruining what would have otherwise been good music.
  • Watch the volume of the music at your block party. Cities have noise ordinances in effect. If you disobey them you will likely receive a visit from the police department, which could spoil the block party.
