How to Select a Schwinn Bicycle

Founded in 1895, Schwinn Bicycles became the bicycle brand in the U.S. for decade upon decade. The company fell out of favor, however, when they failed to enter the BMX and mountain bike markets in the second half of the 20th century. New leadership in the 21st century, however, is bringing the brand back in a big way, building on nostalgia and high quality. Whether the bicycle is for you or your child, Schwinn has the model choice for everyone.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Select the Best Schwinn Bicycle for You or Your Child

Step1
Measure your child's inseam if the bike is for her, and use this chart at iBike.org to gauge the size you need while you do your research.
Step2
Head to the Schwinn Web site for detailed information on each model they currently offer. If you're looking for their great "retro" models, see the Cruisers category.
Step3
Select a few model lines that are related to each other. Since Schwinn offers such a broad range of bikes, you don't want to rule out any similar ones before seeing them up close and test-riding them.
Step4
Look up your smallest local authorized dealer. As mentioned below, you will want to find a retailer that specializes in bikes only, rather than a broad range of sports. Not only will you get better service at a bike shop, but you will also find a better selection from which to choose.
Step5
Bring your child with you to the store, if the bicycle is for him.
Step6
Give the salesperson all the relevant size information about you or your child and tell them what sort of riding you or your child expect to do.
Step7
Select the bike that feels the most comfortable both for your body and your wallet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Schwinn is a great company to look to for a wide range of street bikes. Instead of simply offering a road style, a mountain bike style and a commuter style, they offer several styles in between that create a wide spectrum of options for the consumer.
  • Many Schwinn bikes are carried by large retailers. Be sure you're working with a bike expert when you go to the larger stores. If you're not getting thoughtful answers to your questions, head for a more specialized bicycle shop.
