Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Research Autographed Memorabilia

Step1
Choose a theme for your autograph collection. Collect autographs and signed memorabilia of celebrities, athletes and politicians.
Step2
Find out how much an autograph is worth by consulting a price guide like "The Sanders Price Guide to Autographs".
Step3
Know what you're looking for. Have signature books on hand when you go autograph hunting or subscribe to PSA/DNA Authentication Services to view sample autographs.

Collect Autographed Memorabilia

Step1
Acquire autographed memorabilia through estate sales, memorabilia stores, conventions, shows, Internet auctions and online dealers. Signed items can include equipment, uniforms, collector cards, cast or team photos, scripts, books and programs. Be sure to authenticate purchases through reputable authentication services.
Step2
Approach celebrities directly at charity events, book signings, auctions, speaking engagements and game practices.
Step3
Request autographs by sending a personal note to a celebrity with a self-addressed, stamped return envelope to their publicist or manager. Obtain addresses through directories such as "The Celebrity Address Directory & Autograph Collector's Guide". There is no guarantee you will receive a response, so be careful about mailing anything irreplaceable to be signed.
Step4
Display and store your autographed memorabilia with care. Picture frames should have UV-resistant plexiglass and acid-free paper matting and autographed cards should be stored in PVC-free plastic sleeves to protect signatures. Bulkier signed items should be stored in air-tight plastic boxes or glass cases and kept away from moisture, sun and extreme temperatures.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be polite when requesting autographs, whether in person or by mail.
  • Know what you're buying when you collect an autograph, including how much it should cost and what it should look like. Ask for a certificate of authenticity.
  • Know that outside of signed cast or team photos, multiple signatures can devalue an item if the signers aren't equally collectible.
