Step 1
Decide what style of music suits your talent and your taste in music.
-
Step 2
Practice, practice, practice! As a singer/songwriter you must love your vocation to dedicate your entire heart, soul and time to it.
-
Step 3
Write continually. If you are talented in this area, you will extract some good material from all of your writing. If you are not a songwriter, listen to all types of music continually to expand your musical repertoire.
-
Step 4
Decide if you want an agent, or if you would like to represent yourself to potential clients. There are advantages to both. An agent can find you singing jobs, but takes part of your pay. As a freelance singer, you may choose the venues you would like to perform and will not owe a percentage to an agent.
-
Step 5
Make a demo tape. Most establishments want to hear what you have to offer. Present yourself in a positive manner so as to improve your chances of being considered.
-
Step 6
Perform every chance you are given, whether you are paid little or nothing. The experience and exposure are priceless, both for your confidence and for word of mouth advertising.
-
Step 7
Take good care of yourself. Performing is a strenuous activity, and because of the late hours you are likely to work, it is easy to get run down and likely damage your voice. Make sure you get enough rest.

on 8/1/2009 Decent article but how do you transpose this into being a SONGWRITER and less of a singer.
