If you love the nostalgic look of weather vanes or have a weather buff on your gift list, you may want to know how to choose a weather vane. Just follow these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Know your vane. The entire purpose of a weather vane is to spin in a direction that tells you where the wind is coming from. At the very least, choose a weather vane that can spin.
Step2
Choose a weather vane that has an arrow or figure that points into the wind for easy reading.
Step3
Select a weather vane that has North, South, East and West directional markers as well.
Step4
Understand design balance. A weather vane must be properly designed to spin correctly. It should rotate into a strong wind to expose the least amount of surface area with the arrow pointing into the direction from where the wind is blowing.
Step5
Choose the material. There are a number of different materials you can choose for a weather vane based on location and weather conditions. Be sure it can weather the local conditions.
Step6
Select a style that best fits the person. There are many different weather vane designs available from apples to zebras. Even if you live in a suburban location, a stylish and functional weather vane can add charm to any rooftop.
