Create a pizza garden with your children and grow everything except the dough, mozzarella and pepperoni! Not only will your children learn about gardening, but they’ll learn how terrific vegetables taste when they put them on their own pizza.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Choose a garden spot in full sun and prepare the soil if needed with compost or composted manure.
Step2
Locate an approximate center point for your garden and drive a stake into the ground.
Step3
Create a circular garden. Select a length of rope and tie it to the center stake then tie the other end to a stick. Stretch the length of rope out taught and let the kids drag the stick around in the dirt 360 degrees to create a circular garden.
Step4
Decide what you want to plant for your pizza garden. Some suggestions are tomatoes, green pepper, onion, garlic, oregano and basil.
Step5
Divide your circular garden into pizza slices for planting your crops. You’ll probably need 2 to 4 slices just for the tomatoes. Fill up the other pie slices with the rest of the produce and herbs.
Step6
Involve the children in every aspect of planning, preparing, planting, watering, growing and harvesting your garden during the entire season.
Step7
Make pizza sauce with your children using the tomatoes and herbs. Slice vegetables from your produce. Let the children make their own pizza with the sauces, vegetables, a ready-made pizza crust, cheese and pepperoni and pop it in the oven to bake. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
