There are many wonderful herbs used to make tea. Herbal tea gardens date back to the middle ages in England when they were planted out of necessity to create teas to cure everything from the flu to a broken heart. Discover the many benefits of creating some unique teas by planting your own herbal tea garden.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Provide an enclosure to your herbal tea garden to ward off garden pests by using thick hedges, stone walls, or fences.

  2. Step 2

Select an area that receives full sun with soil that drains well to provide the best environment for herbs.

  3. Step 3

Choose a central focal point or object for your herb garden such as a statue, fountain or sun dial.

  4. Step 4

Create a peaceful spot such as a stone bench or wrought iron table and chairs where you can sit and enjoy hot or cold herbal tea amidst the fragrant tranquility of your herbal tea garden.

  5. Step 5

Design a symmetric planting bed for the herbs around the central focal point, outlining the design with bricks or stones. Create individual sections for each type of herb. Some ideas are decorative knot designs, rectangles or circles around the focal point.

  6. Step 6

Plant traditional herbs such peppermint, lemon balm, bee balm, horehound, tarragon, basil, sesame, caraway and anything else you’d like to use in teas, for cooking or for medicinal purposes.

  7. Step 7

Use decorative sticks or garden tags to label your herbs and keep track of what you planted and where. This will be essential when you search recipes and need to harvest specific herbs to make your tea.

  8. Step 8

Harvest your herbs regularly as needed for teas and cooking so they remain compact and bushy. Prune and weed as necessary so they don’t overcrowd surrounding herbs.

  9. Step 9

Enjoy the soothing aromas of your herbal tea garden by tending to it as needed and create amazing herbal teas to soothe body, mind and spirit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use containers to plant invasive herbs to keep them restrained while still getting the benefit of being able to use them in your teas.
