You’re great at getting the stains out of your dirty laundry but to get them out of your teeth requires professional help. Tooth whitening will lift those stains and your self esteem. But before you rush in and get hit with a dental bill that leaves your mouth hanging open, follow these steps to get the most out of a tooth whitening procedure by a dentist.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Schedule a tooth whitening consultation with your dentist. Most dental offices will be happy to schedule a free consultation, but be sure you know up front if there are any fees or obligation.

  2. Step 2

Research different tooth whitening methods prior to your consultation and prepare a list of specific questions.

  3. Step 3

Check your dental insurance coverage regarding tooth whitening. Tooth whitening is considered a cosmetic procedure; most dental insurances will not pay for this treatment.

  4. Step 4

Attend your scheduled tooth whitening consultation and ask questions. Discover which tooth whitening procedures your dental office provides, side effects, time involved for the whitening procedure, cost and expected shade results by viewing whitening charts.

  5. Step 5

Be realistic about your results. The natural color of teeth vary, so don’t expect your results to be pure white. Whitening your teeth until they are 4 to 6 shades lighter will make a noticeable difference.

  6. Step 6

Get additional opinions. If your insurance isn’t going to pay for tooth whitening, comparison shop with several dentists. Compare costs and procedures.

  7. Step 7

Schedule an appointment for your tooth whitening.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dental offices also offer tooth whitening kits that you can use at home for a fraction of the cost of other in-office tooth whitening methods.
  • Some stains, such as tetracycline staining, cannot be removed from your teeth because the discoloration is inside the tooth.

on 10/18/2007 Hi,

I wanted to whiten my teeth and had my custom made trays fabricated by my dentist to fit all of my teeth. I ran out of gel quickly so I began doing some research on the internet about refill gels instead of asking my dentist for some more gels. What I found was that there are many online shops selling the exact same gels that they sell to dentist offices all around the world. One company I found was NovaWhite Teeth Whitening and they offer refill gels and also they will even make your own custom trays for you. After some pondering and talking with my dentist I decided to take the plunge and order some from the NovaWhite store at http://www.novawhite.com. I received the gels in 3 days and they worked wonders! The gel was even bubble gum flavored which is always a treat. I have since placed 2 more orders with the company and they have saved me from visiting my dentist any further! x
