Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar coined the term "Automobile University" to describe how time spent in traffic can be put to good use by listening to self-help materials or "reading" a recorded book. Podcasts, which are digital media files distributed over the Internet, are a great source of educational material. Downloading them for use in a car is easy and inexpensive.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Personal computer with Internet access
  • Podcast management software
  • Digital music player or CD-Rs
  • Car sound system
  1. Step 1

Find podcasts by checking a podcast directory such as Yahoo Podcasts or i-Tunes. Choose educational podcasts over those that feature fiction, comedy, music or pop culture news.

  2. Step 2

Acquire software to manage podcasts. Often these are already part of your computer's operating system. Podcast directories also offer links to free software you can download.

  3. Step 3

Subscribe to podcasts. Your computer will periodically check the podcasters' Web sites for new episodes and download them automatically.

  4. Step 4

Transfer the podcasts to a digital music player that can be used with your car's sound system. Or use the podcast management software you downloaded to transfer (burn) podcasts to CD-Rs.

  5. Step 5

Get in your car, play your podcasts and get an education while you drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • CD-Rs are less expensive than CD-R/Ws and can be played in any system that accepts MP3-formatted CDs.
  • Use a marker to label your CD-Rs. Never use paper labels, which can peel off inside your player, necessitating an expensive repair.
  • Using headphones or earbuds while driving is illegal since they shut out sounds you may need to hear to drive safely, such as the sirens of emergency vehicles or car horns.
  • Stop listening to your podcasts if you become bored with the material or if it’s distracting you from driving
