If a bit of the Wild West is in store for your child's next birthday party, then you're in luck. With a little imagination anyone can easily transform standard birthday activities and decorations into western themed fun for cow pokes of all ages.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Brown paper bags
  • Photo of birthday child
  • Hay bales
  • Red checkered tablecloths
  • Plastic cowboy hats
  • Helium filled balloons
  • Hat decorations
  • Poster board
  • Construction paper
  • Western theme clothing items

Step1
Make invitations by cutting up brown paper bags and turning them into a Wanted Poster. Cut the edges so they're jagged and not straight and glue on a picture of the birthday child. Write in all the details about where and when and say something like "Wanted--cow pokes to help celebrate Mary's birthday."
Step2
Place bails of hay around your yard or patio for seating and cover tables in red checkered tablecloths. Serve dry snacks in plastic cowboy hats turned upside down and make some table centerpieces by tying helium balloons to toy horses or horseshoes.
Step3
Give each guest a plain cowboy hat to decorate as they wait for the others to arrive. Set up a table with some feathers, felt stars, sheriff badges and leather strips for them to use. Have the birthday child's hat made up ahead of time so that they are free to greet guests at the door. This activity will not only entertain the kids for a while but they will each have a unique party favor to take home.
Step4
Enlarge a picture of your child at a local print shop, and glue it to a piece of poster board to hang on the wall. Then make sheriff's badges out of construction paper for a Pin the Badge on the Sheriff game.
Step5
Find western theme clothing items like cowboy hats, vests, leather jackets and chaps and have the kids put them on and pose for a picture. Then include a copy of the picture with their thank you cards to give each guest a special photo memory of the party.
Step6
Wrap small toys like horses, horseshoe magnets, toy spurs and candy in bandanas to give to all the guests as party favors.
