How to Become a State Trooper in Alabama
Protecting and serving the citizens of Alabama is the primary duty of an Alabama state trooper. The steps you need to follow to become an Alabama State Trooper are time consuming, but definitely worthwhile when the end result is becoming a member of this elite team.

Take the written exam. The State Department of Personnel conducts this test. To schedule your exam, contact the State Personnel Department at (334) 242-3389, or the Department of Public Safety at (334) 353-8709.

Complete the Physical Ability/Agility test which is given by the Department of Public Safety.

Expect to be fingerprinted as part of the preliminary processing. This step involves the DPS setting up a file, including your fingerprints and written exam scores.

Undergo a background check, polygraph test and psychological evaluation with a clinical psychologist selected by the department.

Pass the physical exam. A designated physician will give the medical exam to make certain you are physically fit for this position.

Enter the Training Academy. If you have successfully passed the previous steps, you will complete a 24-week training session with other recruits in Selma, Alabama.

Participate in field training which involves riding with an experienced trooper for 10 weeks. This is the final step of this extensive process.

Tips & Warnings
If you are unsatisfied with your written exam score you may apply to re-take it nine months after you first take it.
You must pass each step to proceed to the next part of the process. If you fail a step you must start over at the begining.
