Step 1
Start your New Jersey camping trip by deciding which area of the state you would like to visit. Starting from northeastern New Jersey, there are the Skylands, Gateway, Delaware River, Atlantic Shore, Greater Atlantic City and the Southern Shore. Each region contains a wealth of state parks, forests and natural areas.
-
Step 2
Marvel at the unique mixing of two very different ecosystems in northeastern New Jersey’s Cheesequake State Park. The aquatic ecosystem of coastal salt marsh and swamps blends into northeastern hardwood forest, blessing this state park with amazing biodiversity. Campers will delight in the exceptional trails and the nearby historic Twin Lights of the Navesink.
-
Step 3
Visit Swartswood State Park. Established in 1914, Swartswood was New Jersey's first state park and has some of the best fishing and relaxing surroundings of any place in the state. The glacier-carved lakes and sinkholes are dazzling accents to the lush forests. Bald eagles are frequently sighted in the park.
-
Step 4
Reserve a campground in one of the 19 New Jersey state park campgrounds by calling the appropriate state park listed on the website of the Division of Parks and Forestry (see below). Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance. There is also a camping reservation application available for mail-in reservation requests. Camping fees are $20 per night.
-
Step 5
Print out and bring with you all the trail maps, guides and directions. Also, since several New Jersey state parks are located near metropolitan areas, such as New York and Atlantic City, you may want to take a side trip.
