Enjoy a short, relaxing hike in the Big Thicket National Preserve with a visit to Sundew Trail. The special attractions of this one mile jaunt are two types of carnivorous plants, the pitcher plant and the sundew. A shorter version of the loop trail is accessible to wheelchairs, making Sundew Trail one of the most accessible trails in Texas.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable hiking boots
  • Loose, layered seasonal clothing
  • Camera
  • Insect repellent

Step1
Take US 69-287 south from Woodville for about 17 miles to FM 2827.
Step2
Take a right and go about 1/2 mile to a dirt road on the left with a sign that reads "Big Thicket Sundew Trail." Drive about 1/2 mile to the marked parking area.
Step3
Follow the short loop trail in either direction. Wet areas have boardwalks for crossing.
Step4
An optional shorter hike is available that's paved and wheelchair accessible.
Step5
Look for carnivorous plants in the preserve--the pitcher plant and the sundew--pictured in the brochure available at the trailhead.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pick up the brochure guide and map at the trailhead to help identify the carnivorous plants.
  • Bring a camera for photos of the unique flora of the Sundew trail area.
  • Visit from late spring through summer to enjoy the numerous wildflowers.
  • Big Thicket is hot and mosquito infested during the summer. Bring insect repellent.
