How to Mix Mortar

You want to build a retaining wall or cement a path but need the stuff to bring it all together. Although the science is easy, it may be physically demanding. The components themselves are heavy and adding water makes them heavier. Follow these steps to make the perfect mortar for your project. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Beach sand
  • Masonry cement or mortar mix or spec mix
  • Gallon bucket
  • Wheelbarrow or a large mixing container
  • Watering hose
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

      Add 3 parts beach sand and 1 part masonry cement in a wheel borrow.

      Pour approximetly 2 gallons of water on top of the mixture.

      Mix the mortar mixture. Do this by folding the mixture from the bottom into the water. Do this until the water is no longer in a puddle.

      Add another gallon of water.

    • 5

      Continue to fold the mixture.

      Spray any addtional water onto the mortar mixture and fold until the mortar attains a smooth consistancy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mortar mix or a spec mix is easier than using the sand and masonry cement. Eliminate mixing with sand if you use the mortar or spec mixes.

  • This project works best on a cloudy day with temperatures between 50-65 degrees. This will keep the mortar from drying too quickly.

  • If the mortar does begin to dry while applying, add more water.

  • You may use a large mixing container if a wheelbarrow is not available.

  • Wear old clothing and shoes. Mortar mix is difficult to remove after it dries on fabric, so wear clothing that you don't care about getting messy.
