A home is made just that much more warm and inviting when you see wonderful flowers pouring out of a flower box. This unique contained garden brings so much color and life to any area. One will be able to hang it as a window flower box, set it on a deck's edge or place it wherever the perfect place may be. The following will help you build your own flower box.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Table saw or saw
  • Paper and pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Clamps
  • Drill
  • 16- 3 inch wood screws (2-1/1 inches in length)
  • Putty
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint
  • Wood
  • Paintbrush
  1. Step 1

Decide the dimensions of the flower box. If you are making this to hang as a window flower box, they typically are as long as the window.

  2. Step 2

Draw your flower box, labeling the size of each board.

  3. Step 3

Draw accordingly. The longest piece will be the front piece. The two end pieces will be much smaller and both measure the same length. These will be set to the inside of the long piece. The last side piece (back) will take the dimension of the longest piece minus the two widths of the side pieces. Finally, the bottom will be as long as the front piece and as wide as the sides.

  4. Step 4

Cut all pieces according to your dimensions.

  5. Step 5

Clamp the boards together. Do this for all the sides excluding the bottom piece.

  6. Step 6

Screw in each board to the adjoining board with 2 1/2 to 3 inch wood screws.

  7. Step 7

Put a screw at the top and bottom of the adjoining board.

  8. Step 8

Unclamp the four sides that are now screwed together.

  9. Step 9

Place the bottom piece on and screw in with two screws per board (eight screws total).

  10. Step 10

Subset screws into the wood. This means to screw the screws deep into the wood in preparations to cover the screws.

  11. Step 11

Putty over the screws and allow to dry accordingly.

  12. Step 12

Sand the putty after it has dried.

  13. Step 13

Drill holes at the bottom of the flower box. This will allow water to drain.

  14. Step 14

    Paint the flower box.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are making a window flower box, you may want to leave the front off until it is hung and then attach it. This will allow much simpler hanging. Otherwise it is difficult to place the screw and drill into the open area and attach to the house.
  • Measure twice, cut once!!!
