Whitewater rafting is an exhilarating experience. Whether you are a newbie or an experienced rafter, this is an exciting trip for all. Once you have taken a run down a river, you will understand why so many people become hooked on this fun sport. Planning your whitewater rafting trip is simple if you follow the correct procedures.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Do some research. Start by choosing which area of the country you will travel to and which rivers are available for whitewater rafting trips. Then decide which river you would like to float, depending on your experience and expertise. After you have decided on a river, look into the various rafting outfitters that guide tours down the river you have chosen.
Step2
Decide how long of a trip you will take. Rafting tours are available in half, full and multi-day packages. If you are traveling with children, a half day trip will be the most fun for your family or group. Full day trips generally begin at eight or nine in the morning and go until three or four in the afternoon. Multi-day trips will vary depending on the river and tour company you choose.
Step3
Make reservations with your outfitting company early to get the best choice of dates and times. Have all pertinent papers sent to you, and research the company's cancellation policies.
Step4
Check with the travel company to see if they will have a dry box for you to put your belongings in. If they do not have a dry box, purchase a waterproof pouch at a sporting goods store.
Step5
Show up prepared with an extra change of clothing, medications, inhalers, bee sting kits or any other medical necessities. Bring a pair of shoes that fit well and can be worn in the water and on the beach. Also pack a waterproof camera, camping gear for multi-day trips, sunscreen and sunglasses. Check with your outfitter for any additional items they recommend for whitewater rafting trips.
Step6
Be prepared to sign a waiver with your outfitter. As with all active sports, there are inherent risks involved with whitewater rafting. Inquire with your outfitter about the safety training of the river guides and ask about their safety record. Always wear a lifevest when you are in the raft.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear plenty of sunscreen, and reapply often.
  • Do not bring your car keys, cell phone or wallet with you on the rafting trip.
  • Carefully choose the class of river you will float. A river that is too advanced for your party and skills will be a scary and dangerous experience.
  • Do not attempt to guide your own raft unless you are highly experienced and familiar with the river you will float.
