How to Study for a DAT

Most dental schools require the computer administered Dental Admissions Test (DAT) as an admissions requirement. Any aspiring dentist must do well on the DAT in order to get into the dental program of his or her choice. This may seem like a daunting task, but, with adequate review of some topics you learned in high school and college, DAT success is within your reach.

1. Develop a positive outlook. Conquering the DAT is not impossible. However, you must believe in yourself and your academic ability before you proceed with your test preparation.
2. Familiarize yourself with the DAT’s format and instructions. The multiple-choice, timed test consists of four main sections: math, natural sciences, reading comprehension and perceptual ability. The American Dental Association (ADA) website has more information regarding the DAT’s structure.
3. Take practice exams under ideal testing conditions. Many sample tests are available online and in libraries. The ADA website has some good practice questions.
4. Spend extra study time on any discovered weaknesses in one or more areas of the DAT when attempting practice questions. After additional studying, they will no longer be troublesome.
5. Consult another person who took the DAT recently. An experienced test taker who may have tips and insights on the exam is an invaluable resource. Studying with others who are planning to take the DAT is another option.

Tips & Warnings

• Begin studying eight to twelve weeks prior to your test date. This will allow you to review at a reasonable pace and prevent “cramming” the night before the exam.
