From Quick Guide: Figure Skating
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the lingo. Figure skating rules place point values on the elements performed in the routines. Grasp the concepts of spins, jumps, step and spiral sequences, and combinations first.

  2. Step 2

Watch TV. The figure skating season begins in late October and runs until early spring. Competitions, American and international, will be on TV on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Watch and listen to the skills the skaters perform and make the connection between the skills' names and the actual moves.

  3. Step 3

Read the official rules. This seems very logical, but the rules might as well be in a foreign language if there is no point of reference. Go to the United States Figure Skating Association's official website and look under the category "Judging Systems."

  4. Step 4

Check your schedule. Regional competitions are held across the United States. These athletes may be the next Olympic champions. Look at the USFA website and find a competition nearby. Watch live action and meet other enthusiasts and experts.
