While you are not likely to find wallaroo food at your local pet store, you can meet a wallroo’s nutritional needs relatively easily. With a little planning and a variety of food, you will have a happy and healthy wallaroo.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pet wallaroo food
  • Bermuda hay
  • Food dish
  • Hay rack
  • Vegetables
  • Grains
  • Water trough
  1. Step 1

Discuss your pet wallaroo’s diet with the breeder/person you adopt from. Your wallaroo may have specific habits or preferences about food and knowing them will make the transition to your home easier.

  2. Step 2

Start with a commercially prepared pet wallaroo or wallaby food. Surprisingly, there are a few out there! Purina makes a wallaroo food, and wallaby food can be purchased online. Follow the directions for feeding printed on the packaging.

  3. Step 3

Provide Bermuda hay throughout the year to meet your wallaroo’s fiber needs.

  4. Step 4

Allow your wallaroo to browse and graze in a fenced outdoor area. Wallaroos will browse on shrubs and graze on grass and other vegetation and they need to gnaw on twigs to keep their teeth healthy.

  5. Step 5

Add vegetables and grains as nutritious treats for your pet wallaroo. Try carrots, apples, sweet potatoes and various greens and grains.

  6. Step 6

Spread peanut butter on bread for a special treat and as a way to hide the taste of powered supplements or medications.

  7. Step 7

Provide fresh water for your wallaroo at all times.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may need to add supplements to your wallaroo’s diet, depending on his health needs. Discuss necessary supplements with your veterinarian.
  • Check hay before you buy it to ensure that it is clean and not dusty or moldy.
  • Baby wallaroos need to be bottle-fed with a specialized formula. If you are bottle-feeding a baby wallaroo, check with the breeder or exotic pet dealer for information on the specialized formula your pet will need.
  • Do not feed your wallaroo cruciform vegetables, such as cabbage or broccoli. These foods will lead to gas and severe digestive upset.
