The following guide allows a short practical study of some of Jamaica's cuisine. If you are not certain that you have gained enough knowledge on the subject--take another bite!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Dine on Jamaican Ackee. This flavorful fruit is Jamaica's national dish and is commonly made for breakfast. Ackees blossom in a glossy red and yellow pod with large, gleaming black seeds. Its flesh is a buttery yellow and its flavor although distinct is malleable. It is traditionally cooked with Jamaican Salt Fish--giving it a savory and highly individual taste. When Ackee is not ripe its pod is shut tight. Forcing the pod open releases deadly toxins which renders the Ackee poisonous and inedible.
Step2
Savor a hot "beef patty" for lunch. Beef patties are golden colored half moon shaped pastries. It is filled with piping hot minced beef that might be spicy or mild depending on the chef. Patties are considered fast food in Jamaica. Grab one to appease hunger pangs and you'll be set until dinnertime. In recent years, patties have become more versatile with the substitution of chicken, spinach, or shrimp instead of beef. Jamaicans serve miniature versions as Hors d'oeuvres.
Step3
Munch on an Otaheite Apple. This charming looking Jamaican fruit is pear shaped and comes in many varying shades of red. It is this writer's opinion though, that when the otaheite is a dark colored burgundy that the sweet crisp flavor is unparalleled. It makes a phenomenal gourmet pie.
Step4
Travel up the northernmost regions of St Catherine, Jamaica to feast on the island's world famous Jerk Pork. Enjoy rustic outdoor dining by roadside stand cooks who deliver exquisite Jerk flavors to your palate. Make sure to purchase fresh roasted breadfruit to go with your Jerk.
Step5
Sip on the superior taste of Jamaica's Blue Mountain Coffee. This excellent beverage is great with any meal. Sweeten Blue Mountain with condensed milk to add a richness that is incomparable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read a biography of Captain Bligh who is credited with supplying Jamaica with its first Ackee, Breadfruit and Otaheite Apples.
