The field of human resources is challenging and constantly changing. There are many job opportunities in the human resources industry because nearly all medium and large companies have a human resources department. An internship is a great way to see what the job entails and decide if it is the right field for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Start with your school’s career placement office. Many schools maintain a list of internship opportunities. Speak with a career counselor to get tips on job hunting and interviewing.
Step2
Contact a local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to ask about internship opportunities. SHRM members are often leaders in their field and involved in the community. Some local chapters have a website where you can post a resume and search job postings. If possible, attend a local meeting to network.
Step3
Make a list of companies in your area where you would like to work. Check the local newspaper and job posting websites to see which companies are hiring. Unfortunately most companies don’t advertise internship opportunities, but doing the research will provide a list of contacts where you can send a resume and cover letter.
Step4
Prepare for the interview. Create a basic resume containing your school, volunteer and work experience. Create a brief cover letter describing why you are interested in a career in human resources. Prepare to answer interview questions about your skills and abilities.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before you start looking for an internship, think about what type of company interests you. Consider things such as industry, company size and human resources department size.
  • An internship is an opportunity to learn. When you meet with prospective companies, ask questions to determine if the company plans to provide the advice, guidance and support.
  • Eliminate companies from your list that are just looking for an assistant to perform clerical duties.
