Samba is a popular type of Brazilian music and is sometimes viewed as Brazilian’s national music. The term samba also refers to Brazilian dance that corresponds to this popular music. Students who attend a samba summer camp may learn the history of the music and dance or practice playing, singing or dancing to the music.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider whether to attend a camp dedicated to samba or one in which samba is one of many types of music and dance. Camps dedicated to samba may be more difficult to find and receive a place in, but the instruction will focus on the history, important aspects and instruction of samba. Camps which include samba but have a more general focus will be easier to find and will provide a student with a broader range of topics and classes.

  2. Step 2

Decide on a day or residential camp. Individuals who participate in a residential camp will stay on site while those participating in day camps will stay at home and attend camp during the day.

  3. Step 3

Search online for samba summer camps. Sites like MySummerCamps.com offer listings of summer camps by topic area. Others may offer information about samba instruction, including camps.

  4. Step 4

Contact local samba instructors for information and recommendations on summer camps that they may be familiar with or teach at.

  5. Step 5

Choose a summer camp that offers samba instruction and register the student.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that in addition to camp costs, you will also need to provide transportation to and from the summer camp for the student. This may limit the number of possible samba summer camps to camps within a certain area or region.
  • For students with a specific interest in samba, a summer camp dedicated to the topic will be the best choice. If a student is generally interested in music, including samba, a more general music or dance summer camp will provide a greater exposure to different types of music and dance.
  • If you find a general music or dance summer camp in your area, call to see if they include samba instruction. If they do not, ask if they would consider adding it to the curriculum.
  • Once you’ve found a summer camp that includes instruction in samba, talk to former students or instructors about the camp and their experiences in it. Ask if they recommend the camp to others and their reasons for doing so or not.
