A baseball batting helmet is essential for playing baseball at any level. Even if it is a backyard pick-up game, it is wise to wear a helmet for protection. Since it's a piece of equipment you might not ordinarily think of purchasing, follow a few tips to find a batting helmet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search the Web. Scour the Internet for the closest sporting goods store by simply typing your location and the name of a chain sports store into your favorite search engine. You should get a ton of results.

  2. Step 2

Call the store. Depending on where you live, baseball batting helmets can be a seasonal item, so call the store first to make sure they have them in stock.

  3. Step 3

Go to the store. Once at the store, ask the sales associate to help you with baseball batting helmets. Helmets have come a long way from their clunky originals. Some are aerodynamic, streamlined, and even made of space-age materials. Ask a sales associate to talk you through the differences.

  4. Step 4

Try on the helmet. This is the most important step. The helmet must fit snugly. If it's too loose, it will fly right off when you take a swing or run the bases; if it's too tight, you'll feel like your head is being twisted in a vice. While at the store, borrow a bat and take a couple of practice swings while wearing the helmet to ensure a proper fit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a group discount. If you are buying helmets for an entire team, see if you can get a discount from the store. Usually the more you buy, the more you save.
  • Be sure that the helmet you are purchasing has passed a safety inspection. If it hasn't, the helmet may be defective and not offer the protection you need.
