Step 1
Allow him to stop on his own. Many children will simply discontinue using the pacifier without any encouragement from parents.
-
Step 2
Point out that her peers are not using a pacifier. If your child attends a class or daycare, you can show him that "big kids" don't use a pacifier. In order to be a big kid, your child may decide to give up the pacifier.
-
Step 3
Keep your child busy. Most toddlers will suck on a pacifier when they are bored. If he has plenty of toys, books and activities to keep him busy, he will not think about asking for his pacifier.
-
Step 4
Set limits on when the child can use the pacifier. Let her know that only at bedtime will she be able to have it. Gradually stop giving it to her at night as well.
-
Step 5
Reward your child when she stops relying on the pacifier. This will make him feel good about himself and he will no longer desire the comfort that the pacifier brings.
-
Step 6
Ask your doctor for suggestions if you can't seem to get your child to give up the pacifier.

on 6/9/2009 I was having major problems with my son's binky adiction! My friend absolutly raved about the cut method, and all of the psychology behind it. She emailed me a link to a site that has a free publication ( www.bye-bye-binky.com -supported by advertisements) on dropping the binky, so I tried it. Very cool stuff, worked beautifully for my son. Four days later he did not want anything to do with his binky. Highly recomended. Let me know your thoughts if you try it.... Bella
