You want a guest to feel welcome in your home whether they are staying for a short or long visit. The goal is to make them comfortable and provide them with enough space that they can unpack and access their belongings easily. Here are a few suggestions for making a guest room welcoming.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a room for your guest that has at least a minimal amount of privacy. If you do not have a lot of space or options, consider a privacy screen or curtain for a room that cannot be closed off.

  2. Step 2

Allow your guest to stay in a room that has its own bathroom or easy access to a hall bath with a shower or tub.

  3. Step 3

Clear out a couple of drawers for clothing or make room in a closet or wardrobe for clothes to be hung. You want to provide some shelving or temporary storage space.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the room is clean and clutter free. This is especially important if you have a dedicated guest room or if it doubles as another room when not used by a guest.

  5. Step 5

Make extra blankets available so your guest doesn't have to ask for them. Store these on a quilt rack or make them easily accessible in a linen closet.

  6. Step 6

Purchase some new, inexpensive pillows and pillow cases. Put these in the closet or wardrobe in the room in case your guest wants to use more pillows that what you have on the bed.

  7. Step 7

Make sure the bed linens are clean and fresh.

  8. Step 8

Place some of your guest's "favorites" around the room. This could be a daily newspaper, a book or magazine or a few photos of previous visits or vacations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make your guest's room inviting and warm. It is always a nice touch to let the room reflect your personal taste and style.
  • Make a basket of items your guest might need such as toiletry items or a favorite scent of lotion or cream for a female guest.
  • You can place a fabric softener sheet in a closet, drawer or cabinet to freshen the smell if it is not often used.
  • Candles and soft lighting can add warmth to any room.
  • Make a night light available for your guest. Waking up or having to walk down a hall to a bathroom can be difficult in an unfamiliar environment.
