Evaluate what you have to work with. There are some things you just can’t change when renting. If your kitchen counters are avocado green, there’s nothing you can do about it. Decide to work with the permanent décor elements rather than fighting against them.

Embrace your beige walls. The truth is, many landlords may let you paint, as long as you repaint when you move out. Ask yourself if it’s really worth the trouble to do that, though. There are other ways to add color to your room.

Choose a color scheme. Apartments are usually fairly small, and you can make them feel bigger by having the color scheme flow throughout the apartment instead of changing up the colors drastically in each room.

Add color with fabrics. Color can be added with drapes, pillows, bedding and throws.

Examine your lighting situation. Determine where you are lacking the light that you need. When bright lights aren’t needed, you may opt for a bulb that produces a softer, more flattering light. Lamps can be both functional and serve as a sculptural piece.

Clothe your walls. Choose art for your wall such as photographs, paintings or prints. Adding one mirror per room will open up the space.

Accessorize. Add personality with decorative pieces. Tell people about yourself with your décor. If you like to travel, try putting out coffee table books about different countries you’ve visited. If you love to cook, use clear containers of spices as part of the embellishment of your kitchen. Be creative.

Add candles and plants. Each room can benefit from at least one of each. The plant adds a living element to a room and candles add visual warmth.

Have fun. Remember that you are in a temporary space and any design decision you make is easily changeable. Take risks, and think outside of the box.
