How to Mold New Crayons Out of Old Ones

Are you tired of that guilty feeling you get when you see those old broken crayons pieces in the junk drawer or bottom of the toy box? If you have kids around the house, inevitably you also have crayons. Now, it's time to make some fun shaped new crayons out of those little bits that you just haven't quite been able to throw out. This project is both rewarding for parents and fun for the kids!

Things You'll Need

• Molds (try old soda bottle caps, mini muffin tins, ice trays or candy molds)
• Microwave safe bowl to melt crayons (butter tub works great!)
• Old crayon pieces
• Glitter (optional)

Instructions

1. Microwave the crayon pieces in an old butter tub to melt.

2. Add glitter and mix with wooden craft stick (this step is optional).

3. Pour the melted crayon wax into molds.

4. Put the molds in the freezer to cool for about 15 to 20 minutes.

5. Pop the newly shaped "crayons" out of the molds and color away!

Tips & Warnings

• As the wax cools off, it shrinks away from the sides and will pop out. Spraying the insides of the mold with cooking spray also ensures easy removal.

• If any melted wax is spilled on counter tops, let it cool and it will chip right off!

• You can also mold the wax into shapes with your hands instead of using molds. After microwaving, just wait until it starts to cool and pour melted wax onto wax paper. Roll wax into shapes, such as cylinder, or balls. Remember, short, thicker "crayon" shapes don't break as easily.

• Be careful of little hands with hot crayon wax.
