Step 1
Begin in the top left corner of the page. This is where you write the date. Since mail is not instantaneous and at one time in history took months to get to its destination, it is important to know when the letter was written and how much time lapsed before delivery.
-
Step 2
Include the return address in the upper left corner a space below the date. This is important for letters written during times of travel or constant movement. It was often the only information from loved ones on their location. In modern times, it is a must for business letters.
-
Step 3
Address the recipient of the letter with a salutation. This is also be in the upper left part, a space beneath the return address. In a personal letter this may begin with “Dear” followed by a comma. There are many different ways to address the recipient. A less personal letter may begin with “To Whom it May Concern” followed by a colon.
-
Step 4
Begin the body of the letter. This includes the content of the letter, and the purpose of the correspondence. Do not indent the first paragraph, but indent all the following paragraphs. Remember all the conventions of writing, such as punctuation.
-
Step 5
Close the letter with a proper sign off. Many personal letters end with “Your Friend” or “Love” ending with a comma. Some other choices are “Best Regards,” “Thanks” and “Sincerely” all followed by commas.
-
Step 6
Sign the letter. A signature is used most commonly. For less formal writings, just write a first name. For business letters, type the name with the rest of the letter and then sign below the printed name.
