How to Learn to Ski
Skiing is an exciting sport for children and adults alike. When you first venture out on the slopes take a few minutes to learn the basics. Do not head straight to the top of the mountain without at least knowing how to turn and stop. Your ski trip will be a lot safer and more fun if you are skiing on terrain that you can handle.

1
Get the proper equipment. Skis, poles and boots can be expensive. If you are just learning to ski, it is probably best to rent equipment until you decide if you like skiing.
-
2
Take a Lesson. You will learn much more quickly with a lesson from a trained professional than by trying to figure out how to ski on your own or from a friend. You will be safer and have more fun.

3
Start on the bunny hill. Most slopes have areas where beginning skiers can get the feel for being on skis. Take advantage of the gentle slope to learn to turn and stop.
-
4
Begin with the time tested snowplow. Turn the tips of your skis in slightly and bend your knees. Putting more pressure on one foot will turn you in the opposite direction. Turning your skis across the hill will slow you down.
-
5
Practice turning and stopping on the bunny hill until you feel you can control your direction and speed. This control will be vital when you venture onto the actual slopes.
-
6
Pick a beginner slope. Once you have finished your lesson and feel comfortable turning and stopping, try a beginner's slope. You need to learn how to negotiate a slope without crashing into other people.
-
7
Be ready for the chair lift. Hold your poles in one hand leaving the other free to hold on. Watch for the chair coming and sit on it. Keep your tips pointed up and stand up when the ground is under you.
