How to Sell Travel Writing

Anyone who enjoys traveling and is a decent writer can make money by selling articles about their trips. You can even write 'travel' articles about your hometown. Writing about your trips is a fun way to make a little extra money as a hobby or even as a career.

Instructions

Writing Your Travel Article

1. Research the market online and find out what places are of interest right now.

2. Choose a place to write about. You may want to do a grouping of activities or places, such as "The 5 Best Beaches in Texas" or "Museums of Philadelphia."

3. Visit the place you're writing about. Take notes and, if you choose, take pictures.

4. Write a short article of around 500 to 800 words on the place you visited. Shorter articles are usually easier to sell.

Selling Your Travel Article

1. Call or email editors of newspapers or magazines who hire freelance writers and discuss your article.

2. Submit your article for their perusal if the editor is interested.

3. Try to sell your article to other publications.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep in mind that an article could potentially be sold many times over. Make it broad enough to sell to several publications.

• Submit photographs of your trip with your piece. Doing so makes life easier for the editor (who may have to find pictures for the article anyway), and it may help sell your article.
