    Instructions

      • 1

Admit to yourself that you have a problem. Until you get to this point, the food addiction will continue, as will the personal problems experienced from compulsive eating.

      • 2

Look for organizations that specialize in helping people overcome food addiction. Your family doctor may be able to advise you on where to get help.

      • 3

Go to a meeting of one or more groups. This is a crucial step to affirm your commitment to overcoming your food addiction. Most groups helping others to overcome addictions will maintain the anonymity of their members.

      • 4

Attend every meeting. This helps keep you focused on your goal and allows you to see your own progress as you observe newer members seeking help.

      • 5

Keep a diary to document your progress, and make sure you write in it daily.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Before you reach for the food you are addicted to, think about how sick you will feel after you finally stop eating.

    • When you feel an overwhelming need to eat, find something else to do to keep you busy.

    • The longer you go without eating the food causing the addiction, the less you will miss it. One day you will realize you haven't thought about it for hours.

    • If you get through one day without eating the forbidden food, get through a second day. Once you are through the second day, ask yourself why you would go back when you have come this far. Be committed.
