Some of the most memorable moments in a parent’s life are spent on the baseball diamond. Watching your child make his or her first catch brings back the thrill of youth. Fortunately, you don’t have to be Joe Torre to get your little one ready to play ball. Here are some easy ways to prepare yourself and your little boy or girl for the sandlots.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Read up on the basics. If you are new to the game, a quick overview of basic throwing, hitting and fielding mechanics will ensure that you teach safe fundamental skills.
Step2
Set aside time to practice before the season starts. Carve out some time each week where you and your little one can focus on basic skills like catching and throwing. Focus on these aspects first until the child has mastered them before moving on to more complex skills.
Step3
Keep things fun. Skip rocks in a pond, throw water balloons or make up games where the fundamental skills of baseball can be learned in a fun way.
Step4
Lighten up. Your child may never make the high school baseball team, let alone become a pro. That’s okay. See Little League as a way to bond with your kids instead of creating the next Ken Griffey Jr.
Step5
See baseball as more than a game. Playing any sport can be used as a springboard to teach other life skills such as discipline, sportsmanship, competition and dedication. Be aware of any teaching moment and use it wisely.
Step6
Talk to the coach. If you are not coaching your son's or daughter’s team, get to know the coach before signing them up. Has the coach ever worked with children? What are the expectations? Is winning the main goal?
Step7
Get the whole family involved. Baseball is America’s pastime because it brings people together. Plan on going to as many games as possible. Sometimes just knowing you are there is all your child needs.
Step8
Volunteer your services to the team. Coaching, carpooling and sponsoring are just a few ways you can help. Having a commitment ensures that you will be there for your child.
