Step 1
Make time. How long has it been since you called your mother? Since you visited her? Since you cleaned her gutters? Make it a point to keep in touch with her at least once a week.
-
Step 2
Listen. Like most women, your mom will drop a lot of hints if something is on her mind. Listening to her complaints will provide insight into what she needs from you. Sometimes just listening is enough!
-
Step 3
Find something you both have in common. Do you both enjoy photography? Bird watching? Creative writing? Find a class at your local community college where you both can spend time doing the things you love.
-
Step 4
Set boundaries. Some mothers need clear boundaries to follow, or they will continue to treat you as their little boy. Take, for instance, the relationship between Marie and Ray on "Everybody Loves Raymond"!
-
Step 5
Ask another woman. Does your mom have a sister whom she gets along with? Ask her how your mother is doing. Do you have sisters who can provide a little advice? It’s very difficult to think like a woman when you weren’t made that way.
-
Step 6
Look to your dad for advice. Believe it or not, your father may provide valuable insight into the mother-son relationship. However, if your dad seems just as clueless as you, refer back to step number 5!
-
Step 7
Be available. Some sons seem to drop off the face of the earth once they leave home. The best way to show someone that you love them is to be there when it matters. If your mother is in need, be there.
-
Step 8
Seek help. A dysfunctional mother-and-son relationship can lead to poor mental health and/or wreak havoc on your marriage. Know when to seek professional counseling.
