How to Choose a Portable CD Player That Plays Burned CDs

Burning CDs is a great way to take your music from your computer with you, but it is important to choose a portable CD player will be able to play your burned CDs. Not all portable CD players play all file formats or both types of burnable CDs and choosing the wrong portable CD player may leave you with a stack of useless burned CDs.

1. Decide the type of files you are burning to CD. Most applications that allow you to burn CDs will let you burn audio CDs or data CDs. Audio CDs will play on most CD players, while data CDs can hold more songs in MP3 or WMA format but do not play in many portable CD players.
2. Choose between CD-R and CD-RW. A CD-R will allow you to burn information one time to the disc, where as a CD-RW will allow you to burn to a disc, erase it and burn to the disk again. Many portable CD players only play CD-Rs.
3. Check the packaging of the portable CD player. Usually there will be indicators on the package such as “CD-R” or “CD-R/RW.” Also look for MP3 and WMA playback indicated on the package or the CD player to ensure that your CDs will play.
4. Test the CD player with your burned CDs. Keep your receipt in case your CDs do not play and you can exchange your CD player or get your money back.

Tips & Warnings

• Use MP3’s if you can. Most music on your computer is probably in MP3 format and you can put close to ten times as many songs on an MP3 CD. This can give you well over 100 songs on a CD.
• Don’t buy on assumption. If a portable CD player does not specify that it will play the type or format of CDs you have, there is a good chance that it won’t.
