Buying barricades is a great way to help control a crowd and reinforce safety at your event. While not meant to exclude the general public, barricades offer an extra layer of protection for VIPs or staff. They also help control the flow of pedestrian traffic. Here are a few tips on buying barricades for your event.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Determine the size of your event. How many people are you expecting? How many vendors do you have? Do you need to section off rides or attractions? These are all questions you must answer before contacting the barricade company. The best way to do this is to draw a scale diagram. Now, you'll be able to see where you think you might have lines, or where you need to keep the general public out (such as kitchens and underneath rides or stages).
Step2
Measure. Now if you're hosting an event like an apple festival that occurs over many, many acres you can't ACTUALLY measure everything. But with your trusty diagram you can approximate pretty closely the distance you'll need to cover. Remember to measure for 4 sides and potentially multiple layers if building space for lines.
Step3
Surf the web. Plug in your location and the term "buy" or "rent barricades" to your favorite search engine. You should come up with a plethora of results. Take the time to surf several sites and make a list of companies with which you think you could potentially do business.
Step4
Contact the barricade companies. Now that you've made the list, contact the barricade companies and discuss which barricades you'd like to buy. Also discuss the purpose of your barricades and the terms of your event. Is it for safety? Or a mere deterrent?
Step5
Visit the company. Once you've chosen a company you think you'd like to work with, be sure to make a site visit to see the product you will be receiving. Make sure it lives up to your expectations and will be adequate for your event.
Step6
Sign the contract. After your visit, if the opportunity to buy barricades was as described, enter into a contract with the company. Things that should be included in the contract are price, delivery date, return policy in case of excess and set-up at your event. Are you responsible upon delivery or will the company selling to you be responsible?
Step7
Take delivery. Upon delivery inspect the barricades and make sure you are happy with what you bought and they were delivered as promised. Something as cumbersome as a barricade is not easy to buy and return, so make sure you got what you paid for!

Tips & Warnings

  • Tell your insurance company that you purchased barricades for your event. Because of the added safety factor, they may give you a discount.
