  3. Step 3

Set pier blocks no more than 4 feet apart from each other. Be sure to check that they are level and plum.

  4. Step 4

Depending on finished height of deck, it may be necessary to cut 4-by-4 posts to set on top of the pier blocks, to obtain the desired height. These 4-by-4 posts should be pressure-treated lumber.

Cut floor joist and edge band to desired measurements for the construction of the spa deck.

Go back and screw every floor joist with a minimum of 2 3-inch deck screws.

  9. Step 9

Install lattice paneling to the face of deck for skirting.

  10. Step 10

Seal deck with a waterproof wood sealer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to imbed your pier blocks into the ground so that there is no risk of the spa deck sagging later on.
  • Make sure when you are attaching your boards to the floor joist that you use screws and not nails. Nails will work themselves out of the boards over time.
  • Make sure you check the level of the pier blocks and edge band before installing your deck boards.
  • Also check that the deck boards are not warped.
  • It is very important to use pressure-treated wood when an item built is made for outdoors.
  • A good sealer should be reapplied at least once a year for proper protection.
