Boxing is one of the oldest and most popular sports in the United States. Two fighters square off in a square ring and try to knock their opponent out with punches. Learning to box takes time, patience and a lot of training. With these basic steps you can get your start to becoming a boxer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a boxing gym. Pretty much all medium- or large-sized cities will have at least one boxing gym. Do your research and choose a gym that feels right to you and fits your needs.

  2. Step 2

Start with the basics. One of the first exercises you will learn is throwing straight punches with full extension of your arms while properly stepping into the punch.

  3. Step 3

Practice your footwork. Good footwork is one of the greatest weapons a fighter can possess. It allows you to move your opponent where you want in the ring and to get out of trouble.

  4. Step 4

Hit a heavy bag. This is one of the most productive ways to build punching power and to incorporate proper footwork with your punches.

  5. Step 5

Get a sparring partner. Sparring is the best method of training to increase your boxing skill. With a good sparring session you can improve the timing of your punches and movement while also getting a feel for taking a hit while you throw a punch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you spar with someone near your level at the beginning of your training. It will not help your skill, ego or body to fight with a boxer who has a great deal of experience. In the beginning you should be paired with someone of equal experience.
  • Be prepared to get hit. Boxing is a combat sport and the point of a boxing match is to knock the other fighter out, or at least hit them enough to win the bout.

on 11/8/2007 That's a good overview. Remember to build up your cardiovascular endurance as well. I've written a couple articles on building your own boxing equipment that should be valuable to fighters.
