Many women wish to breastfeed, but also want the baby to take a bottle sometimes as well. Using a breast pump will allow your baby to be fed your breast milk even when you are not around. This is ideal for working mothers as well as providing fathers with a chance to help out with feedings. Once you decide to pump, you need to know how to correctly use a breast pump.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the type of breast pump that you wish to use. Your choices include manual and electric. There are also single and double pumps available.

  2. Step 2

Read all instructions before using the pump. Put the instructions is an accessible spot in case you need to refer to them.

  3. Step 3

Sterilize the pump before use. Clean all parts of the pump thoroughly and allow it to dry before you start pumping.

  4. Step 4

Begin the milk let down process. This is the step that will determine how much milk you are able to pump. Taking time to relax and massage your breasts while thinking of your baby will stimulate the milk to let down quickly.

  5. Step 5

Place the breast shield provided upon your breast with the nipple directly in the center. Begin to pump manually or turn the electric pump’s power on.

  6. Step 6

Pump for at least 5 minutes on each side. Using a double pump cuts your pumping time in half.

  7. Step 7

Store the pumped milk directly in the bottle or use a milk storage bag. You can keep the milk for a week in the refrigerator and a couple of months in the freezer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a pump based on how often you plan to use it. Mothers that will only need it occasionally can buy the manual type, while frequent users should invest in a double electric pump.
  • Use a breast pump as often as you would typically nurse your baby. For a newborn, this would be every 2 to 3 hours.
  • Don’t be discouraged if you are unable to pump any milk at first. It can take time until you are able to collect enough to feed your baby.
  • If you are using an electric pump, start using it on the lowest settings for the first couple of times.
