Whether you want to downsize to a smaller home, or you need to downsize, it can be a frustrating experience. Standing in a sea of boxes that you can’t unpack is enough to drive you over the edge. A smaller home plan is tough to deal with, but with a little organization, you can survive!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Truck or moving van
  • Storage Unit
  • Organization!
  1. Step 1

Measure, measure, measure! Either measure your rooms, or get a copy of the floor plans so you can decide what furniture will fit, and what needs to go.

  2. Step 2

Anticipate your storage needs. If you are temporarily downsizing, determine if your new house has enough attic, closet or basement storage for your remaining items BEFORE you make the move.

  3. Step 3

Clean house! If you are permanently downsizing, remove the items you aren’t keeping BEFORE you move.

  4. Step 4

Use the rooms in your new house to accommodate your family. The previous owners or tenants may have had a beautiful dining room set up, but you can use that room as a play room just as easily!

  5. Step 5

Install or build shelves above windows or in corners that aren’t being used. This will allow you to display the things that make your house a home and eliminate unnecessary furniture.

  6. Step 6

Determine what items you use frequently, and keep them within reach. It will be much easier to take the punch bowl that you use once a year out of storage than to constantly unpack and re-pack your wine glasses!

  7. Step 7

Use light colors on walls and window treatments. Rooms will feel larger with light-colored walls, and outside light always brightens up a room.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are making a temporary move and need extra storage space, you may need to use a local storage unit.
  • If you are storing a lot of items, you may consider using the door-to-door storage units that are delivered to your house and picked up when you are finished. This could save a lot of time and energy, two things you are short on during a move!
  • Yard sales are a great way to get rid of items you are able to part with and make a little extra moving cash at the same time.
