How to Visit the Aztec Park Teotihuacan

Much is still unknown about the archaeological park that houses Teotihuacan and the Pyramid of the Sun, which is the third largest pyramid in the world. These secrets, however, are slowly being excavated and sifted through. This city is thought to have been built in the first couple of centuries BC and is located about one hour northwest of Mexico City. Teotihuacan is thought to have had a population of over 60,000 people in it's prime, but we still do not know where these people went or how they died. With a few simple steps you can see this magnificent sight.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the toll motorway for about 45 minutes. Tourists are welcome to drive there themselves or catch a taxi to the site. Tours are sometimes also available, especially during the summer tourist months. It is well worth the trip to see the Pyramid of the Sun.

    • 2

Walk down the Avenue of the Dead, Calzada de los Muertos, when you get there. This avenue is like the main drag of the town as it connects the main parts of the city. Walking through what used to be the center of town lets you imagine a day in the life of an Aztec.

    • 3

Stop at the south end of the Avenue and take in The Citadel, La Ciudadela. This is a large area that is square in shape and is surrounded by pyramids and structures. Some think that this was the center of the city and that ritual performances were held at this site.

    • 4

Visit the Feathered Serpent Pyramid for a view of one of the most detailed monuments at Teotihuacan. There are several graves that have been uncovered here that you can tour and investigate. This pyramid is said to be the principal pyramid at the Ciudadela and is located just off to the side.

    • 5

Don't miss the third largest pyramid in the world, second largest in Mexico, Piramide del Sol, the Pyramid of the Sun. Tourists can climb the pyramid for the best views of the area. Watch your step as the steps are somewhat narrow.

    • 6

Tour the north end of the strip to visit La Piramide de la Luna, the Pyramid of the Moon. You can also climb this pyramid, although the sites are amazing, this pyramid is not as high as the Pyramid of the Sun.

    • 7

Stop to see the Papantla Flyers that climb a large pole. You can't miss these men as they are dressed in traditional Indian costumes. While one man plays the flute, the others "fly" down the pole connected together by a rope at each of their ankles. Tip them well if you enjoyed the show, as this is the way they make their living.

End your trip to this magical place by seeing the murals that depict the Aztec lives in the Palace of Jaguars and the sculptures in the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.
