How to Care for a Mollucan Cockatoo

The mollucan cockatoo can make a great pet for those willing to put the time into it. Caring for a cockatoo can be very demanding and the mollucan is no different. It is known to be very cuddly and relaxed but it is also very large and very loud.

Things You’ll Need:

• Enclosure
• Bird food
• Substrate
• Bird toys
• Cement perch
• Cleaning supplies

1. Purchase an appropriately sized cage for your pet. The minimum size cage should be 42 inches by 30 inches and 60 inches tall. The bars should be about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch apart. The enclosure should also provide for 3 food and water cups.
2. Cover the bottom of the cage with an easily cleaned substrate like corn cob.
3. Clean the cage by changing the substrate, food and water daily. Disinfect the cage, perches and cups on a weekly basis.
4. Avoid drastic temperature changes from drafts and direct sunlight on your mollucan cockatoo’s cage.
5. Feed the mollucan a diet of fortified seed, fresh fruit, veggies and commercial pellets.
6. Keep your bird healthy with regular veterinary visits. If your bird shows any signs of illness visit your vet immediately.
7. Place plenty of wooden toys in your pets cage as the cockatoo will spend a lot of time chewing on them. Also provide cement perches for nail filing.

Tips & Warnings

• Use the third food and water cup for treats.
• Disinfection can be done using a 1 to 20 ratio of household bleach.
• Exercise extreme caution when using bleach to clean your cage. Its fumes are toxic to you and can easily kill your bird as well.
• Do not feed your cockatoo avocado, chocolate, alcohol and caffeine as they are toxic to your bird.
