Planning the Party

Step1
Pick a time of day appropriate for your little one focused on when he is at his happiest. The lunchtime hour works for most. Set a start time and an end time for the party so that you can get your little one down for his second nap.
Step2
Decide on a location that your child will be comfortable with. Avoid using new surroundings on this special day; he or she may not react well.
Step3
Choose a simple theme appropriate to your child’s likes. Remember that you don’t need to go over the top with decorations and favors; this party is mostly for the adults anyway.
Step4
Send invitations out 2 to 3 weeks ahead of time. If you’re feeling crafty, you could make the invitations and thank-you cards. Many craft stores offer card making kits.

Step5
Create a lasting memory for you and your child by having guests sign birthday wishes on a picture matte that you can later frame. Display this on a plate rack and place photos of your child on the table with it. Offer colorful pens for the guests to use. Include photos that showcase him or her throughout their first year. You could also place photos throughout your home for decoration, next to the cake on the table with food and near the gifts. Lay your photo albums out too.
Step6
Plan the menu according to what your child likes. Choose simple foods you know your child will enjoy. Choose something that adults and kids can both enjoy. Chicken tenders, fruit and veggie tray, mini hotdogs or mini hamburgers are some simple ideas everyone should enjoy. You don’t want to have to make 2 different meals that day. When it comes to the cake, pick something that you have tested out and know he or she will like. Applesauce, carrot, spice or pumpkin are great flavors they’re already familiar with. Keep this step simple by making cupcakes and arranging them in a fun way on a pedestal. Use a variety of colors in the icing to match your theme.
Step7
Purchase as much of the supplies as possible at one time. This will ensure that everything matches just in case you go back and the store is out of a particular item. Pick up the thank-you cards at this time too. You’ll be able to get started on them right away and get them out of the way.

Day of the Party

Step1
Assign a family member or friend to take photos and video for you. The last thing you need to worry about are the photos. Keep your attention focused on your little one. He or she may need the extra comfort from mom or dad with all the guests.
Step2
Ask a family member or friend to write down the gifts your child receives and who it is from. This will make writing the thank-you notes much easier later on. Other alternatives to gifts could include a donation to a favorite charity in your child’s name or money towards a college fund. Make sure you mention your wishes on the invitation.
Step3
Take photos of your child with as many guests as possible. Many people will be holding and interacting with your little one; try and capture this on film. Share your photos wishes with the person you put in charge of manning your camera.
Step4
Maintain a light and fun atmosphere. Your child will pick up on any stress and anxiety you may feel. Keep these tips in mind and you’re sure to create a memorable first birthday party for your child.
