1
Find a magician by looking in different places, such as online, in local telephone directories, grocery store bulletin boards or by word of mouth. If you have access to a party planning center, ask for recommendations for reliable magicians.
-
2
Ask specific questions to ensure the magician is a good choice for your party. Ask the magician how much space will be needed for the show, if the show can be done outdoors, and if the magician needs a table. Ask if there is a deposit required and how much the magician charges. Ask if the magician has specific time restraints and make sure the magician guarantees an age appropriate show.

Confirm the date after a magician is chosen. This confirmation needs to be in writing. It can be in the form of an email, a letter or a contract. The confirmation is essential to ensure your time slot and to protect the verbal contract between you and the magician.

Tips & Warnings
Do not allow the magician to perform the show in one room while you are entertaining adults in another room. Remember, he works with kids, but he is still a stranger in your home. Be responsible for all the children in your home.

Good advice here, all of it is standard for a professional magician. I also send a confirmation email a week before the show and make myself available to the parents (or whoever is throwing the party) by phone or email from the time of booking until after the performance. There are a few extra things I do for performances but you'll have to see my website or contact me about bookings to find out ;-).
