Pub crawls provide a fun way to visit a few bars on the same night with an organized group. Often the crawl will have a theme that can be carried through the entire event.

Select a Pub Crawl Theme

Step1
Select a theme that is easy to follow for the group of people attending. While a binary code themed crawl works for hackers, it is a bit difficult for most people. Sometimes simple themes work best as they can be applied easily.
Step2
Look for themes among the venues you choose. You can purposely pick bars that fit the theme or fit the theme to the bars. This works best if you live in a city that has large amounts of bars to choose from in one area. Try an English pub or a jazz bar crawl.
Step3
Find a theme that allows people to wear fun or silly costumes. Costumed-based pub crawls can be as diverse as Renaissance or 1980s. The outfits will also keep the group together as everyone will be easy to spot in a crowded bar.
Step4
Fit the pub crawl to a holiday or special event. A bridal shower theme can have games for the soon-to-be-bride with all guests wearing veils. St. Patrick's Day pub crawls can be focused on green drinks.
Step5
Consider doing a series of pub crawls based on a related theme. You could do a different color based theme for each crawl. Have everyone wear the color of the night, have drinks that are the same color and eat food that matches. This can also work with movies, eras or letters. Plan to have one event a week or one a month.
Step6
Try mixing a pub crawl with food. Start the night at a restaurant and then visit bars that fit the theme. Or at least only have drinks that match the food.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't make it too complicated; you want people to have fun, not stress out about the right thing to wear.
  • The theme does not have to be totally obvious in every element. A Cinco de Mayo theme can mean margaritas and Coronas with people wearing sombreros. You don't actually have to select bars that are decorated in a Mexican style (unless you want to).
  • Consider doing the pub crawl on a slower weekday if you plan an elaborate theme. You don't want your party to disrupt the bar's business.
